Earn as much as 15% cashback every a month on your regular spends
Everytime you refill your car, shop online or pay your recurring bills like utilities, phone bills and insurance premiums with your Standard Chartered JustOne Platinum, you add to your monthly savings. Because you can earn 15% cashback (capped at RM85) per month on petrol purchases, online shopping transactions, and auto bill payments if you spend RM2,500 and above in a month using the card!
And fret not if you think RM2,500 is too steep for your monthly budget. As even a total monthly spend of RM1,000 to RM1,499 will fetch you a respectable 5% cashback (capped at RM12) in the above three spending categories.
And that’s not all. For all the other retail purchases (apart from petrol, online shopping and auto bill payments) you will earn unlimited cashback at the rate of 0.2% per month.
The table below contains details of the cashback earning rate with this card:

So how does the Standard Chartered JustOne Platinum fare against its competitors?
A comparison is a great way to assess a credit card’s true value. So we pitched the JustOne Platinum against Alliance Bank You:nique Rebates (full review here), another popular option when it comes to cashback cards in Malaysia. The Alliance Bank card gives 3% cashback when your total monthly balance falls between RM2,001 and RM3,000, 1.5% cashback for RM1,001 to RM2,000, and 0.5% cashback for monthly spends lesser than RM1,000.
Here’s what we found out:
More cashback with the JustOne Platinum
If you spend more than RM2,500 in a month, you can earn RM85 as cashback with the Standard Chartered card (on petrol, online buys and bills) and RM75 (3% of RM2,500) with the Alliance Bank You:nique Rebates (on all spends). If you spend lesser, say RM1,500 in a month, you will make RM28 as cashback with the JustOne Platinum while RM22.5 (1.5% of RM1,500) with the Alliance Bank card. And for monthly bills of RM500, you can still earn RM12 cashback with the former, but only RM2.5 (0.5% of RM500) with the latter.
But the lack of spending categories make it easier to earn cashback with the Alliance Bank You:nique Rebates
One major advantage that the Alliance Bank You:nique Rebates has over JustOne Platinum is the fact that while the former gives up to 3% cashback on almost all retail spends charged to the card, you can bag up to 15% cashback only on petrol, online purchases and auto bill payments with the Standard Chartered card (all other spends get you unlimited cashback at the rate of 0.2% only).
Plus, it’s slightly easier to maintain the Alliance Bank card
The annual fee for a principal Alliance You:nique Rebates card is RM148 while its RM250 for the JustOne Platinum (both exclusive of taxes). The annual fee for the Alliance Bank card is waived for the first 3 years, compared to only the first-year fee waiver for the JustOne Platinum. Even for the subsequent years, a yearly spending of RM5,000 (or just 12 swipes in a year) can waive off the annual fee for the Alliance Bank card, but you’ll need to spend RM20,000 in a year to waive off the annual fees for the Standard Chartered JustOne Platinum.
But JustOne Platinum comes with more perks and privileges
Yes, discount on GSC tickets and the Good Life Privileges at over 4,000 outlets in Malaysia and across Asia makes the Standard Chartered JustOne Platinum an ideal lifestyle and entertainment partner!
Verdict: A great savings tool if you know how to make the most of it
A great thing about the Standard Chartered JustOne Platinum is its high cashback earning capacity (of up to 15% per month), which also gives you cashback at a handsome rate (5% or 10%, amounting to RM12 or RM28 per month, respectively) when your total monthly spending falls anywhere between RM1,000 and RM2,499.
And if you think the caveat of having only 3 high cashback-earning categories (petrol, online purchases and auto bill payments) is a limitation, here’s a simple tip to maximise the value of your spends — consider buying your groceries online with this card, at least the major chunk for the month. In this way, you will be able to expand the ambit of your cashback-earning categories to include more essential spends into it (as petrol and bill payments are already there).
And if you spend an average of RM1,667 each month of the year, you can not only earn RM336 (RM28x12) as cashback in a year but will also save up on RM250 annual fee after the first-year waiver. The heavier spenders can save as much as RM1,020 (RM85x12) in a year. But do keep in mind that in order to earn that much cashback one would have to spend (RM2,500×12) RM30,000 annually on petrol, online purchases and bill payments combined.
