Plan to Travel! How to Make the Most of the Public Holidays in 2019

With the longest school holiday season about to begin soon, we’re pretty sure you’ve already got your travel plans all mapped out. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our travel blogs as there are plenty of posts with great suggestions.

Also, since the new year is right around the corner, why not plan your annual leaves early for next year? The variety of Malaysia’s ethnic makeup has earned us the reputation of “the land of public holidays”. Well, we should embrace that uniqueness and with the help of some strategic planning, maximise the duration of your our holidays.

1. Go on a 4-days New Year vacation!

New Year’s Day will fall on a Tuesday in 2019. So the smart thing to do is take a leave on Monday, December 31st. That way, you can extend the weekend and literally get four days off!

2. Or a 4-days holiday during Thaipusam Festival

Thaipusam will fall on Monday, January 21, 2019. That means you already have an extended weekend off. If you choose to prolong that to four days, you can take just day leave either on Friday (January 18) or Tuesday (January 22).

3. An almost week-long holiday in the first week of February!

For those of you working in Kuala Lumpur or Labuan, Federal Territory Day falls on Friday, February 1. The following week will see two public holidays for the Chinese New Year on Tuesday, February 5, and Wednesday, February 6. Just take a leave on the Monday in between (February 4) and you can enjoy an extended 6-day holiday!

For those of you who live outside the Federal Territory, you can also take the same day off and have a 5-day extended weekend. Not bad either!

4. A 4 or 5 days holiday before the onset of Ramadan

Labour Day is celebrated on May 1 and in 2019, it falls on a Wednesday. You can take two days off on Thursday (May 2) and Friday (May 3) and enjoy a 5-day break. This will be a good rest for you as the following Monday will be the start of Ramadan – the fasting month for Muslims.

If you are working in the states of Johor, Kedah, or Malacca, the first day of Ramadan is another public holiday for you to enjoy. That makes it six days of holiday!

Vesak Day in 2019 will be on the May 19th. Seeing that it falls on a Sunday, which is already an off-day, the following Monday will be declared a public holiday. Just two days after that, on Wednesday 22, it will be another public holiday, this time for Nuzul Quran. That means you can take leave on the Tuesday (May 21) in between and enjoy a 5-day break.

6. Make a 5-day vacation around Hari Raya Puasa

We know that Christmas this year hasn’t even arrived but that won’t stop us from planning for next year’s Christmas! Especially when December is the month when many employees go on a holiday to exhaust their year’s quota of annual leaves.

For 2019, Christmas will fall on a Wednesday. Make it a season to be jolly by taking the following two days off and turn it into a 5-day vacation instead!
