So how does this card compares against another rewards credit card?
You can understand the true merit of a credit card only when it’s held against another competitor. For comparison sake, let’s pitch the Citi Rewards against the Standard Chartered Visa Platinum (read our review here). Here’s what we found out:
Standard Chartered Visa Platinum has no spending caps to earn 5X Rewards Points
First up, like its Citi counterpart, the Standard Chartered credit card also offers 5x Rewards Points on purchases made at selected departmental stores, overseas spends, and dining bills. But unlike the Citi card, the Standard Chartered Visa Platinum doesn’t put any spending cap to earn 5x Rewards Points. So that’s a minus for the Citi Rewards card, which puts monthly spending cap of RM3,000 for selected departmental store purchases and RM24,000 annually for overseas spends.
But the never-expiring Citi Rewards Points can be redeemed for more benefits
The Standard Chartered 360 degrees Rewards Points expire in 3 years, which is no match to the Citi Rewards Points that never expire! Plus, the Citi Rewards Points can be redeemed for merchandise, air miles, hotel stays and to even pay for daily expenses cutting down your credit card balance, unlike the Standard Chartered points that can only be redeemed for merchandise.
Citi Rewards Credit Card has a steeper minimum income ask
The minimum spending requirement to apply for a Citi Visa Signature is RM60,000 p.a. and it’s RM90,000 for the World Mastercard variant. That said, it takes earnings of only RM24,000 p.a. to apply for a Standard Chartered Visa Platinum.
However, the extra privileges on offer make Citi Rewards a more attractive option
Sure, the Citi Rewards is not as affordable as the Standard Chartered Visa Platinum in terms of minimum income requirement, but it does offer a host of additional privileges to make up for it — like travel insurance, purchase protection, lounge access, concierge services, privileges at golf courses and luxury hotels, etc.
The Citi Rewards Credit Card is mainly targeted at middle to high-income earners to reward not just their purchases at fancy departmental stores and supermarkets but also travel expenses and overseas spends.
While the card ensures its users accumulate a pool of never-expiring Rewards Points quickly, the various spending caps on earning those points may disappoint some. However, the number of additional benefits (lounge access, travel insurance coverage, exclusive deals on hotel bookings, etc.) and more options to redeem the points can make up for those spending caps.
