Alliance Bank You:nique Review: Easy-To-Maintain Credit Cards with Really Cool Benefits

In this age of the millennials who believe in not being part of the crowd and charting their own course, anything that isn’t run of the mill is sure to catch the eye. What’s better is when such exclusive products define their own category.

When it comes to credit cards, you’re probably limited to the usual types – air miles, reward points, and cashback. But, if you’re in search of something truly exclusive, you should check out the Alliance Bank You:nique Credit Card.

First up, this credit card lets its users personalise the look of the card by having a picture of them on it. Now that’s really unique!

But the uniqueness doesn’t end at the personalised look of the Alliance Bank You:nique. Read on to find out more, and scroll down to apply for one and get an exciting free gift!

Choose features that you want in your credit card

A common error that happens when you’re new to the world of credit cards is you end up with a card whose benefits don’t really match up to your spending patterns and lifestyle requirements. For instance, if you get a credit card with great online shopping benefits when your bulk of monthly credit card expenses are offline, you won’t be able to realise your credit card’s full potential.

The Alliance Bank You:nique Credit Card saves you the hassle of ending up with the wrong features by letting you choose them. To put things into perspective, there are three variants of this credit card focusing on three main features that you can choose from – rebates, rates, and rewards.

Let’s take a closer look at each variant and see what it’s all about.

1. Alliance You:nique Rebates Credit Card: Up to 3% unlimited cashback on all your spends

Alliance Bank You:nique Review: Easy-To-Maintain Credit Cards with Really Cool Benefits

First up is the rebates variant of this credit card. To begin with, it offers an attractive cashback rate on all your retail transactions no matter what you’re spending on and where you’re spending it. What’s more? There’s no limit on the amount of cashback you can earn on all your retail spends.

Features and benefits

  • Earn up to 3% unlimited cashback on all retail spends
  • Enjoy unconditional annual fee waiver for the first 3 years
  • Get the annual fee of RM148 waived for subsequent years by spending at least RM5,000 p.a. or charging the card a minimum of 12 times in a year
  • Customise the look of your credit card with the provision to have a picture of yours on it

Here’s how the cashback programme for the Alliance Bank You:nique Rebates card works:

Minimum monthly spend Applicable cashback rate
RM0 – RM1,000 0.5%
RM1,001 – RM2,000 1.5%
RM2,001 – RM3,000 3%
More than RM3,000 0.3%

Wondering how good this credit card is for rebates? A quick comparison with a similar cashback credit card—the Standard Chartered JustOne Platinum—shows that the Alliance Bank credit card comes up trumps.

It’s a fact that the Standard Chartered credit card gives 15% cashback every month, but it does so only on 3 spending categories — petrol refills, online purchases and auto bill payments — when you spend more than RM2,500 in a month. More importantly, the total cashback that can be earned is capped at RM85 per month.

If you compare that with the Alliance Bank card, you get 3% cashback on all your spendings when you spend anywhere between RM2,000 and RM3,000 in a month. That means if you spend RM3,000 using the Alliance Bank card, you earn (3% of RM3,000) RM90 as cashback — RM5 more than RM85 (maximum monthly cashback limit for the StanChart card). The absence of any additional riders on eligible spending categories or merchant outlets makes it that much easier for you to earn the cashback amount and boost your savings.

Having said that, if you’re a heavier spender, you can earn more cashback with the StanChart card (up to RM85) than the Alliance Bank card that gives cashback only at a low rate of 0.3% when your monthly spending exceeds RM3,000.

2. Alliance Bank You:nique Rates Card: Take advantage of a low 9% p.a. interest rate

Alliance Bank You:nique Review: Easy-To-Maintain Credit Cards with Really Cool Benefits

The second variant of this card—the Alliance Bank You:nique Rates Credit Card—is solely focused on the applicable interest rate. Credit cards usually charge interest at rates between 15% to 18% p.a. on your unpaid balance after the interest-free period of 20 days. However, with the Alliance Bank You:nique Rates card, you can enjoy a low interest rate of 9% p.a. on your unpaid balance for the entire first year.

You can continue using the card with the same interest rate of 9% p.a. after 12 months if you’ve made all your previous card payments on time. The annual fee for this card is waived for the first 3 years as well. Thereafter, you’ll have to spend a minimum of RM5,000 p.a. or charge your card at least 12 times over a year.

Features and benefits

  • Enjoy a low interest rate of 9% p.a. on your unpaid card balance for the first 12 months
  • The annual fee is waived for the first 3 years
  • Customise the look of your credit card with the provision to have a picture of yours on it

When it comes to a credit card with a low interest rate, the Alliance Bank You:nique Rates Credit Card has only the AmBank TRUE Visa Credit Card for competition.

Although the Alliance Bank card’s interest rate is higher (at 9% p.a.) when compared to the 7.99% p.a. that the AmBank card offers for the first year, the former does charge lower interest rates from the second year onwards – 9% p.a. (with prompt payments) – as opposed to the 12% p.a. charged by the AmBank card.

That being said, the AmBank credit card also gives a 3% cashback on your online purchases capped at RM30 per month. The Alliance Bank Rates card, on the other hand, doesn’t offer any additional cashback or reward points.

Also, while the AmBank card comes with unconditional lifetime annual fee waiver, the Alliance Bank Rates’ annual fee can be waived with a minimum yearly spend of RM5,000 or 12 swipes a year after the first 3 years.

3. Alliance Bank You:nique Rewards Card: Get 2x reward points on most of your spends

Alliance Bank You:nique Review: Easy-To-Maintain Credit Cards with Really Cool Benefits

The last variant is the Alliance Bank You:nique Rewards Credit Card. This card lets you earn never-expiring Timeless Bonus Points on all your retail spends except petrol and government agency transactions. You also get automatically enrolled in the Alliance OneBank Rewards Program that lets you earn TBPs on all Alliance Bank financial products.

Features and benefits

  • Earn 2x Timeless Bonus Points for every RM1 that you spend with this card and redeem them for freebies. Check out the bank catalogue for more information
  • Get the annual fee waived for free for the first 3 years
  • To get the annual fee waived after three years, spend a minimum of RM5,000 p.a. or charge the card at least 12 times in a year
  • Customise the look of your credit card with the provision to have a picture of yours on it

While the number of reward points on offer for this card might not be very big, it more than makes up for it by letting you earn points on almost all kinds of transactions made with the card. Apart from the regular retail spends, you can earn points when you use this card to get any other Alliance Bank financial product.

If you compare it with a similar competitor card like the Standard Chartered Visa Platinum, you’ll realise that while the StanChart card offers 5x reward points, it does so only on certain spending categories — departmental store purchases, dining spends and online transactions. On the other hand, the Alliance Bank card offers 2x TBPs on all retail spends except petrol and government agency transactions.

But the StanChart card also offers 5,000 bonus reward points every month when your total monthly balance exceeds RM1,500. The Alliance Bank You:nique Rewards doesn’t have any provision for bonus points.

Does the card have any drawbacks?

With so much talk revolving around what’s good about this credit card, it’s time we looked at the other side as well – the drawbacks. Here are some noteworthy drawbacks of the Alliance Bank You:nique Credit Card:

  • To earn the maximum cashback rate of 3% on all your retail spends using the Alliance Bank You:nique Rebates Credit Card, you’ll need to spend a minimum of RM2,000 in a month

Verdict

Alliance Bank You:nique Review: Easy-To-Maintain Credit Cards with Really Cool Benefits

To sum things up, each of the Alliance You:nique variants add a lot of value to your regular spends — be it the 3% cashback on the Rebates card or only 9% interest with the Rates card or 2x reward points on the Rewards card. While it can be argued they may not be the very best in the market, the absence of complicated additional riders (like specific spending categories offering more cashback or reward points or the compulsion to shop at certain merchants or websites to bag cashback or reward points) is the outstanding feature of these credit cards.

As such, it’s a lot easier to realise the full benefits of these cards. Add to that the freedom to choose a variant whose benefits are most in line with your preferences, and to have a picture of yours as the card cover image — it just makes things way cooler!
